Take A Bet On Yourself

December 27, 2021

If you’re feeling the momentum, inspiration, and possibility of significant positive change, then let’s leverage it and run with it. It’s time to take a bet on yourself!

When you place a bet on yourself it means that you’re invested in your success. It becomes what you’re rooting for and building toward, because you want to deliver on it. Whether it feels authentic or not, placing bets on yourself is like setting an intention. It plants desire in your subconscious and psychologically you start making adjustments to bring that intention into reality.

You’ve heard it before, but there is no better place to invest than in yourself. You are the safest investment you’ll ever make because despite all market fluctuations and changes around you, the relationship you have with yourself is a constant. There’s no more important relationship. So place that bet and be the empowering voice that cheers yourself on and believes the best will transpire for you.

What does it actually look like to take a bet on yourself? Well it’s about giving that quiet but empowering voice in your head reason to be a little louder. It’s taking action in ways that prove your worthiness, and expecting the best to come of it. For example, maybe you're hesitant to invest in a gym membership, or business coaching, because you don’t know that it’ll be worth it. Place the bet on yourself and prove yourself right. Yes, you can grow in areas you’ve had difficulty in the past! It’s about auditing your life and seeing the areas that aren’t where you want them to be, at work, in a relationship, or otherwise, and speaking your truth so that you can get what you want.

Your soul is calling for you to do certain things that you’ve repressed and shoved down for years, alongside your confidence. Placing a bet on yourself is your statement that you want things to change, and you believe they will, or else you wouldn't be investing in it. Trust me when I say this, things will flow into place and you will respond in incredible ways when you place a bet on yourself!

Practice Does Not Make Perfect

December 24, 2021

Let’s talk about one of the most common expressions we’ve all heard at some point that is actually patently false. It’s the old saying “Practice makes perfect.”

Can you think of the last time you practiced something and you became perfect at it? Yea, me neither. We shouldn’t use perfection as the object to pursue if it’s unattainable. If that’s the case, then what did happen the last time you practiced something? Did you get better at it? Practice does not make perfect, it makes improvement.

There’s a larger commentary here on society’s expectations which unfortunately have trickled into our own. It’s the idea that we need to do everything right and if we don’t then it’s not worth doing. But logically we know that there’s a process, and steps to developing anything. So instead of associating the reps we put in, the practice, with the promise of success at the end, let’s attach it to the pursuit of trying and improving.

This is so much easier said than done, I’ve had a tough time embracing it in my own life, but have found 2 things really help. First is practice alongside someone else, both for the accountability of it, but also for the evaluation. Someone else can see improvement in areas that you don’t. Then second is to set short-term goals and progress checks that help illuminate that you’ve reached certain milestones.

The #1 piece of advice for goal setting is to start small for this exact reason - Practice makes improvement, not perfect.

"Create your own buzz and bees will follow."

December 23, 2021

I came across a quote that I thought was kind of cute and I wanted to share it with you. “Create your own buzz and the bees will follow.” It might sound backwards logically, the bees create the buzz, but I’m challenging you to see it another way.

The bottom line is, enthusiasm and having a vibrancy for life is contagious. When someone gives off a really warm vibe, people will gravitate toward it because they want more of it in their life. In this way the buzz brings the bees.

But this doesn’t only apply for being high-energy and enthusiastic - You are always putting your buzz out into the world that resonates at its own cadence, and attracts people with that need. Maybe if you’re more naturally introverted and a listener, you’ll attract people who have something personal to share. Or if you’re a deep thinker, then you’ll attract people who like pondering life’s great questions. Whatever your buzz is, when you put it out in the world it will bring the bees that are most responsive to it.

Let’s get more direct about this in an example: Let’s say you want to attract your soul mate. Your role is to be the type of person that ideal partner would be attracted to. Through your actions and choices, you create the buzz that gets the attention and interest of the queen bee.

The larger point here is - if you want or need something, embody what it’s like to have that thing and it will deliver itself to you. Everything you’re looking for is out there and waiting for you. You just need to put your buzz out there too.

Greatness Isn't Easy

December 22, 2021

Ready for a reality check of a lesson? Greatness isn’t easy. It is 100%, absolutely doable and achievable - you have greatness inside of you - but it isn’t easy.

That’s because being great is reserved for the elite few. Those who go above and beyond to build their dream, who are willing to put in the time and effort to develop skills, relationships, and experience, and who are willing to make sacrifices for it. The greatness inside you is your potential, I promise you are capable of it, but realize that it takes a lot of hard work to bring that greatness out of you.

I liken greatness to being extraordinary, and think about that word - 'extra ordinary'. You need to be more than average. There’s the level that most people play at, where they feel like they’re trying hard and doing their best, and then there’s greatness. It’s a different magnitude of commitment. The interesting thing about greatness is it’s a state, meaning that it’s not about what you do but who you are. In order for greatness to be assigned to you, you need to prove it and you need to earn it.

Like any goal you need to be honest about what you need to do to achieve that goal. In the face of challenges and self-doubt, and the uncertainty you encounter, remember that if it were easy everyone would do it, and certain things are reserved for certain people.

So let’s be self-aware for a second and think about what we really want. Do you want to be great at all costs? Few people genuinely do, I personally don’t, I want more balance in my life, but I do have a strong desire to create a legacy that lives beyond my time on earth. It’s a tall task and in order to get there I realize I need to get a whole lot more serious about what that means for my life. Greatness isn’t for everybody, it would be meaningless if it were, but there are pieces of it that are perfectly suited for you. How great do you want to be? And what does it realistically take to get there?

Finish Things

December 21, 2021

If you’re like me, and anyone else in this world for that matter, you’re getting pulled in 80 different ways in any given moment. What makes it harder is that technology has wired us to be easily distractible and pursue the next shiny object even when there are more important things to do. Occasionally this means we leave tasks unfinished when we move on to the next. This seriously affects your productivity in two way and on two different scales.

First, let’s talk about the immediate, or short-term. Eventually you’ll need to return to whatever you didn’t finish to close the task, and what’s often underestimated is the amount of time and energy it takes to refocus and get it done. Even when multiple things need to get done, overall it’s more productive to work on tasks to their completion for that very reason. According to a University of California Irvine study, “it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to get back on task.”

Then there’s the long term implication which really boils down to your identity. Who is the person you want to be? Do you want to follow through on commitments, and do what you say you’re going to do? If so then finishing things the first time will help you affirm that identity. When this lives at the level of your identity no longer do you need to put effort into following through, it just simply the type of person you are.

So as enticing as it might be to jump straight into something that’s new and novel, try to complete what you’re currently working on. It will hijack your attention, be unfair to your time, and suck your energy. And now at the very least you know some of the consequences of what happens when you don’t finish things.

Expressed Vs Depressed

December 20, 2021

I heard an interesting contrast recently that I never quite put together, which is the relationship that being 'expressed' and 'depressed' have. The words only have two letters different and there’s a clear connection here. Let me first say that I don’t mean to be insensitive if you’ve been depressed recently, but I do think today’s message will help us all better relate with ourselves and our emotions.

You’re probably more familiar with what it means to be depressed than expressed, so let’s start there. Being depressed is characterized by having little energy, motivation, desire, being closed off, and feeling a sense of low self-worth. It can be crippling and extremely limiting. Being expressed is the complete opposite. You’re full of energy and confidence, living on your terms and feeling great about it. You are unapologetically you, you’re owning it, and you're open to what the world has to offer.

What’s interesting is being both expressed or depressed attracts more of the same because it dictates the things you do, which then affects the way you feel. So what should be emphasized here is that we should play to win. Instead of trying to avoid depression, our focus should be on pursuing expression. But what does that mean and how would you do that?

Being self-expressed is about living an honest life, with others and yourself. You can not fine-tune where you fit if you don’t know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Basically you need to know who you are so that you can live in integrity with that person. It’s also about knowing your values so that you can act in ways that align with them. You’ll feel more like yourself when you do the things you want to do in the ways you want to do them. It doesn’t need to be rude or inappropriate, it just needs to come from the deepest essence of who you are.
