What Are You Working On?

June 3, 2022

This is something you might be missing that I really need you to hear, so if you’re skimming through this I'd encourage you to read it more carefullly today.

You’re interested in self-development because you’re looking for something. Maybe you’re in a life transition and hoping to establish a healthier and more productive lifestyle. Maybe you’re an ambitious leader who is looking for an edge to achieve more in life. Or maybe you’re someone who is battling something within themselves, like low self-confidence or sense of purpose in life, and you want to improve upon it.

No matter the reason what is most important is that you get what you need. In order to not waste your time, it’s important that you are putting yourself in a position to get results from the time you’re investing in your self-growth.

With all that in mind, this is what you really need to understand - If you want something to change in your life you need to play an active role in changing it.

This means that reading this article is not enough. Learning about what you could do differently is not enough. If you do not have something in mind that you’re specifically looking to improve then the information will just wash over you. Yes, it’s good to acquire new bits of information here and there, but information will only give you a tiny fraction of what you’re really looking for.

It really all boils down to this question - What are you working on? Do you want to be healthier? Do you want to compare yourself to others less? Do you want to strengthen the love and intimacy in your relationship? What are you working on?

If you don’t have an answer, then I can help you find it!

I’m beginning to organize a 3 day Self-Growth Sprint so that you can pinpoint exactly what you should be working on and more importantly, what you can do about it to begin creating the life, influence, and fulfillment you dream about. If you're interested to be considered for this private 3 day experience, then you can join the waitlist here: https://grow.selfimprovementdailytips.com/self-growth-sprint-feedback.

"Nah, bigger."

June 2, 2022

I wanted to highlight a quote from a really good friend of mine named Case Kenny. On his podcast New Mindset Who Dis, he shares his gift for taking big concepts and simplifying them into relatable, modernized wisdom. When it comes to the difficult questions of life and living your potential he boils it down to two words: ”Nah, bigger.”

It’s saying ‘no’ to accepting things how they are right now, and believing that there’s more possibility on the horizon for you. It’s saying ‘no’ to feeling like there’s a permanence to the circumstances you’ve grown to tolerate, and instead aspiring for growth and development. It’s an invitation to step up in your life and a reminder that it’s okay to want more. No matter if things are good, bad, or ugly - "Nah, bigger!"

The reason this is so important to think about is because a lot of people don’t let themselves think this way. They prefer what is comfortable and familiar to what is uncertain and ominous. But with these people, I imagine there’s a part of them that asks themself the question. They wonder what things would be like if they tried something new and exciting. They hear that little voice in their head that craves more out of life, and they wish they had the courage to listen to it more often. But many people don’t, and I want to ask you to reflect on it - Is that you? Are you the type of person that genuinely believes you’re destined for more, but you keep putting it off for later? Are you the type of person that craves to be heard and seen, but you don’t have the confidence to do anything about it so you ignore it?

The first step to materializing everything you want is to acknowledge it. To be honest with where things are and where you want them to be. Bridging that gap is life’s greatest game, and the fact that you’re reading this means that you have the desire to step up for it. Now let’s make it happen!

If you don’t know where to get started with building a better future for yourself, I’m hoping help you with that. If you’re serious about making massive strides and transforming your life faster than ever before, you can join the waitlist for The 3 Day Self-Growth Sprint and establish critical foundations that will catapult you forward when you stop overlooking them. There are limited spots in this first cohort, but you can reserve yours right now.

What You Need To Believe To Be True About Yourself

June 1, 2022

I was challenged to think about the things I need to believe to be true about myself in order to accomplish the things I hope to. To say it another way, only a certain type of person is capable of accomplishing certain types of things. I challenge you to think about it too. The task became identifying who is the person you want to be, and determining how that person relates with themselves and the world around them.

This really becomes a matter of our identity. Our identity is simply who we believe ourselves to be. These beliefs exist at a subconscious level and influence everything, most notably our thoughts,  behaviors, and choices. So if you want to accomplish certain things, you need to have beliefs that support it. If your beliefs are misaligned then you’ll be pulled away from who you want to be and toward being someone else.

The easiest way to think about this is like a thermostat. If the person you want to be has beliefs at 80 degrees, but your current beliefs keep you at 65, then no matter how hard you work you will always return to your equilibrium at 65 degrees. All progress you make to achieve your goals and be the person you want to be will ultimately regress to the level of your current beliefs.

The thought here is to start with the end in mind and reverse engineer your beliefs so that you can be the person you want to be. Someone who believes that they always get hurt by romantic relationships is more likely to get hurt again. Someone who believes that their boss will look over them for a promotion probably won’t get the promotion. And that’s because these beliefs create thoughts that lead to action (or inaction) that affects the results you generate in your life.

This isn’t something that’s easy to gain insight into, but it’s profound when you do. This is something I’m fascinated by and I have a lot of frameworks to apply to this, to make the unconscious conscious, so that you can upgrade your beliefs to match them with the person you want to be. Implementing this is one of the things I’m considering incorporating in the 3 Day Self Growth Sprint I’m putting together. If you want to get first grabs at it when it launches, and to help me by sharing your insights about your personal development journey click the link here and take 5 minutes to fill out the survey!

Put Your Dreams Into Perspective

May 31, 2022

I want to try to contextualize something for you - The life that you aspire to have, the future that you dream of, it’s honestly not that unreasonable. Whether it’s getting consistent income doing work that lights you up, managing your time in a way where you successfully balance self-care and relationships and travel and all of the things you enjoy, or creating a legacy and influence that changes the world, it’s more doable than you think it might be.

How do I know this? Well because there’s probably someone already living your dream or doing something just like it, and let me tell you, they’re human just like you. While you might admire them for what they’re doing or who they are, the reality is they’re not that different from you. They were just starting at one point. They were confused and unsure about how to do it well. They went through all of it and overcame it, just like you can.

John Assaraf has a quote that I think gives some extra encouragement around this concept. He says “The universe wouldn’t be so cruel to give you a dream you weren’t capable of achieving.”

And if your dream really is that big and outlandish, something that’s never been done before, consider this - Is it crazier than building the pyramids of Egypt in 2500 BC? It was a feat that at the time appeared to be physically impossible, but here we are 4500 years later and the pyramids are still standing. The difference between achieving your dream and not is having the courage to take action on it. We’ve been conditioned to value the improbability, that something won’t happen, over the probability that it will. And it keeps many people from even trying.

You are worthy of your dreams. They are more reasonable, more attainable, and closer to you than you even realize. But you need to overcome that voice in your head that says you’re not good enough so that you start doing the things that make it happen. That’s what the people you admire did, and trust me, you can too!

Now if you want to bridge this gap between where you are and where you want to be in a major way, to accelerate you on your path so that you can experience more fulfillment and purpose in your life right now, I'm beginning to put together a 3 Day Self-Growth Sprint. In this sprint you will completely revolutionize your life by establishing the habits, mindsets, and standards of your best-self.

Your dreams won't materialize on their own - Click here to join the waitlist for the 3 Day Self-Growth Sprint to take action on your dreams today!

B.C.D

May 30, 2022

There are two things that are guaranteed in life. Birth and death. Everything else in between is unique to every single person and their circumstances, genetics, interests, and everything else about them. There’s so much out there that could happen but of course it all can’t happen… So what do we do about it?

That’s what this idea B.C.D is. It distills the process of life down into 3 things. Birth. Choices. Death. The quality and activity of your life, what happens between birth and death, is dictated by the choices you make. Choosing what you like and what you don’t. How to feel about this, and what you’re going to do about that. Choosing what people, projects, and passions you want to invest time into. Choosing what you want to prioritize and what you don’t.

It’s all up for grabs and none of it is determined. With free-will we have this gift of choice, and we must use it wisely. We may feel pressured to meet certain expectations or to make certain choices, but letting those forces influence you is also a choice.

The reason this is so impactful is because your choices are more than just arbitrary preferences. They shape your entire life by influencing your behavior, environments, and time availability. Choosing to say 'yes' to something ripples into countless other areas of your life. A big decision like deciding to move to a new city puts a strain on past relationships but opens the door to growing new ones. Or small decisions like choosing to exercise consistently slowly compound into having a healthy future.

We’re born. We make many, many choices, then we die. Our life is determined by the choices we make. So my question to you becomes - Are you choosing how you’re living, or are you just letting life choose for you?

You’re probably making better choices than you’re giving yourself credit for. But if you feel pulled to step up your game, if you’re being honest with yourself and you know there’s more inside of you but you don’t know what to do next to make it reality, I’m starting to think about putting together some private self-improvement sessions where I show you in a very hands on way how to start transforming your life. I'm calling it a "3 Day Self Growth Sprint" and I'd love for you to be a part of it!

What Is Self-Sabotage?

May 27, 2022

The format today is a little different. A few weeks ago I recorded an incredible conversation with my good friend Gina Worful where we really dug into one core concept -Self-sabotage.

Here's the summary:

  • Self-sabotage occurs at a subconscious level, meaning it influences you without you even knowing it
  • Self-sabotage creates a tension in your life because you perceive incongruence between what your mind wants / expects and what your reality brings
  • Self-sabotage takes the form of irrational thinking, overgeneralization, limiting beliefs, and procrastination
  • Self-sabotage lives in your reptilian and limbic brain, but is made sense by our cognitive brain
  • To start intervening with your self-sabotage, you need to cultivate a mindful curiosity around your emotions (shame, guilt, etc.) to begin making the unconscious conscious

When you start diving into this you’d be shocked to learn all the ways that self-sabotage holds you back and keeps you from doing the things you want to do. It’s when you have a plan in place but you fail to take action on it. When you have good intentions to be a certain way but you fall back to how things used to be. Whether this is a new or old concept for you, I think you’d learn a lot by watching the full conversation I had with Gina. You can find it here: https://grow.selfimprovementdailytips.com/self-sabotage-discussion

The first step to overcoming anything is awareness, and this video will give you more knowledge and ideas around how you can take back control of your mind (and life!) Reach out and let me know what you think!

"It all works out."

May 26, 2022

I don’t know what’s going on in your life, and if you need to hear this, but if anything it’s a good reminder to trust the process. Often times we encounter situations that are overwhelming, all-consuming, and seemingly impossible. In the face of illness, disability, financial hardship, relationship issues, everything can feel too heavy to carry. You can resolve that you’re not going to make it. But you will, you always do, and if I’m being honest I've found “it all works out.”

That’s not to say that things won’t be different. They will. Divorce will change your life. An injury will change your life. Downsizing your house or moving to a more affordable place will change your life. But it’s never the end, life goes on and it all works out.

What’s extremely hard to do in the moment, but what I’d challenge you to do the next time you face something like this, is to have faith in the process. To believe that all of this is happening for you in one way or another. It might not look like it and it certainly might not feel like it, but know that there’s something larger happening that is preparing you for greater, leading you forward, and serving you in ways you’re not aware of.

What feels like life-destroying circumstances are truly just life-changing circumstances. Significant? Yes. Defining? Perhaps. But it’s not the end. It’s your choice and within your power to assign meaning to everything you’re experiencing, and to wrap this up let me ask you this question - What are you going through right now that worries you? Breathe into it, and tell yourself, “it’s all works out.”

If you’re in the US or Canada, text me at 949-799-0788 and I’ll send you daily prompts that help you get to know yourself better and build a more meaningful life every day.

Your Limitations Are Your Choice

May 25, 2022

I’m going to tell you the truth, and I hope you’re ready to hear it. You are the limiting factor in your life. You are the bottleneck to achieving your hopes and dreams, the thing that gets in the way of you discovering and living authentic happiness, and the roadblock to feeling fulfilled and significant in the ways you’re contributing to the world. While that might sound like a bad thing it’s actually a really good thing because that means you are in control. You’ve probably heard the expression “mind over matter” before and it’s a powerful thought because the mind knows no limits. Whatever you set your mind to (and choose to believe) sets the boundaries for what you can or can’t do in life.

Taking this to heart, I’ve been running an experiment on myself for the last few weeks that demonstrates this. Every morning as part of my morning routine I do 10 minutes of stretching. It’s full body, usually top down, but I always end it with a hamstring stretch as that’s the most painful and where I can push myself the most. For as long as I can remember I’ve always been much more flexible in my left leg than my right, and I resolved to believe that’s just how it was. That meant that I accepted the fact that I didn’t need to reach as far when stretching my right leg.

But then I realized, I was just choosing to tell myself the story that my left leg was more flexible than my right. And in telling myself that story every morning I was okay taking action in a way that actually further separated my flexibility. I was feeding myself a limitation and it was making things worse.

So I changed my story. I started telling myself that I’m working on getting the same flexibility in my right leg as my left. And what that did was it set an intention in my morning stretching to not settle for less. I didn’t allow myself to make excuses when I started feeling more pain. And in repeatedly pushing myself and putting my body in that stretch, it adjusted. Now maybe 4 weeks of doing it, the difference in flexibility between my two legs is only slightly noticeable, and I’m confident my flexibility will be the same within a month.

We constantly tell ourselves limiting stories and beliefs that are designed to keep things how they already are. This is one way, among many, that your mind sabotages your success. Here's the kicker - As long as you choose to neglect how these forces are present in your life, you will be holding yourself back. You will be the roadblock, the bottleneck, and the obstacle.

Defeating self-sabotage will transform your life. The first step to anything is awareness, and if you want to learn more about self-sabotage, and your own self-sabotaging tendencies, then I have something for you. I sat down with a good friend and expert on the topic, Gina Worful, and we had a fascinating conversation all about it. It’s almost half an hour long, and you can start freeing yourself from all the unnecessary weight by learning how it's affecting you in the first place. Access the conversation here: https://grow.selfimprovementdailytips.com/self-sabotage-discussion

Attributes And Skills

May 24, 2022

Last week I had the pleasure of connecting with former Navy SEAL Rich Diviney and he shared an insight I wanted to pass along to you. Rich is the author of the book “The Attributes” and as one of the most optimized humans on Earth, he made a very fundamental distinction that he uses to help others optimize the ways they contribute and exist within society.

It’s the difference between attributes and skills. Attributes are intangible. They’re something that you’re born with in some capacity and your attributes get expressed in everything you do. In that way your attributes inform your behavior because they are the context that everything you do exists within. It’s your character traits, qualities, and dispositions.

Skills are different from attributes in that they’re more measurable. A skill can be presented or performed in a way that clearly demonstrates if you have it. You are not born with skills, they are learned and acquired over time.

Why is this distinction important? You want to surround yourself with people who have the right attributes. These are the people that have fundamentals like grit, mental acuity, and drive that make you better. Their ideals, values, and standards of operating inspire you to be better. That’s not to say that attributes can’t be developed, they absolutely can, but unlike skills they develop slower and in ways that are difficult to observe.

To put this in an example, last week I learned how to do a backflip. Doing a backflip is the skill, it’s clear whether I can do it or not, and how good I am at it. The attributes that were expressed in that process were having the courage to try, learnability to integrate instruction, and humility to not expect a result immediately.

Rich has put together a great assessment so you can see for yourself which attributes you most possess within your grit. You can go through that exercise by visiting his website here: https://theattributes.com/grit-assessment/
