The Dancing Amazon Delivery Driver
I was in New York City and let’s just say you see a lot of interesting things there. One such thing was I saw an Amazon delivery driver in front of his truck dancing his heart out. He wasn’t recording a video to post online, he wasn’t trying to get anyone’s attention, he was just feeling the music in his headphones and expressing himself.
I loved it! His free spirit made me smile, his bravery to be himself is admirable, and I think the world would be a better place if people were more comfortable doing what they want to do as long as it doesn’t harm anyone else.
To that point, and maybe you can relate to this, some people would have seen this guy dancing and thought differently. Maybe they’d think he’s making things too about himself in a public space. Maybe they’d rationalize his dancing wasn’t authentic and he’s actually trying to cover up deeper insecurities.
The reason I know this is because I used to be one of those people.
And that’s the point I want to make. Whatever that story is we make up about another person, good or bad, reflects our belief system.
Projecting that someone is dominating a public space reveals their feelings of self-consciousness about doing something like that… Concluding someone is faking their authenticity shows doubts about their own… And celebrating someone else’s joyful moment suggests that you find joy within yourself.
The world as we perceive it to be, and the most influential lens to our perception is our belief system.
Here’s the deeper point I’m trying to make: The more we observe the way we are interpreting the things around us, the better insight we gain into ourselves.
In this case it was a guy dancing on the street, but it covers all areas of life - from thinking about someone’s reasons to cover the bill to seeing someone else not follow through on a commitment to someone putting down another persons idea to someone stopping traffic to get glamour shots in the middle of the street.
All of these are things I experienced in New York, and all gave insight into how I’m choosing to see the world around me.
