You're Not Getting Buried... You're Being Planted

Listen Now:

Life can get really hard, feel unfair, and challenge us at our core. It can present us with serious problems at work… Give us financial hardship or debt that seems to keep adding up… Add on more personal responsibilities to accommodate sick or struggling family members when we already have a full plate… And it can feel like a lot. It can even feel like you’re being buried.

In those seasons of life you need to find a new gear, grit your teeth, and get through it. It’s either that or you let life defeat you, so you figure you’ll do your best to put up a fight. This is when growth happens. Through trials and tribulations you are forced to evolve.

Here’s a perspective to consider: You’re not getting buried, you’re being planted.

Think of it like a seed. You need to dig a deep hole to create the conditions for it to grow. It needs to be fully immersed in the soil to get the nutrients it needs to sprout. You also need the right conditions. Maybe this is life’s way of giving you what you didn’t know you needed.

Central to this understanding that you’re being planted, and not buried, is a belief that things are always happening for you. That even the things that make life unnecessarily more difficult have a purpose. When you see the world through that lens, you’ll lean into the hardship that much more and make it out the other side.

If a belief like that doesn’t come naturally to you, there’s a tried and true process for cultivating new beliefs. That involves finding evidence for why that belief is already true. In this case, it involves consciously reframing challenging life events into a hopeful and encouraging interpretation. Do that enough times and you’ll train your mind to see the world that way, unconsciously.

If you want to get started with making that shift, a great first step is to keep a gratitude journal. 30 days of choosing to see the good in the world will change your life. It’s what I call a Super Habit, and if you’re serious about getting consistent with that, improving your mindset, and learning what the 8 other Super Habits, then this is for you!
