You're Already Making An Impact
I was on a call with a new friend named Antonio and in the middle of our conversation, based on what he was sharing, I was hit with a major insight. So many of us aspire to make a difference, be helpful, contribute our gifts, and make the world a better place. I’ve found for myself there are few things that bring the level of fulfillment as being of service to others. For that reason I seek to make an impact! But what I realized is, I already am. In fact we all are. The question is, what’s the impact we’re making?
Simply existing means that you’re making an impact. Your interactions with others, choices, and examples in the world influences the future. Everything we do makes an impact. It’s the law of cause and effect. Every input we provide plays a role in shaping the output of reality. It’s a universal law more than it’s an aspiration for life.
With that in mind, what we truly seek to do is make a positive impact on the world. To leave things better than we found them and deposit goodness that others can benefit from. And for those of us on our personal development journey with a leaning toward making a difference, our pursuit is to maximize the positive impact we can make in the world.
You make a difference unconsciously, but to maximize your positive impact… That’s a very conscious and intentional process. It won’t happen by itself on its own. You need to do the work to be more emotionally intelligent so that your interactions with others make them feel more positive and supported. You need to overcome fear and stand up for what you believe in. You need to take bold action to create opportunities and vehicles for organization and causes to be supported. Our impact comes from us. Our own capacity is our only limitation for what we can give.
It reminds me of the expression “How you do one thing is how you do anything.” If everything you do makes an impact, then everything you do has the potential to make more of a positive impact if you do it the right way. You are a changemaker. You are a creator! But the extent of that change and creation depends on how you choose to show up.
Left to our own devices, we’ll be putting an impact into the world we don’t want to stand behind. But with more intention we become the type of person that genuinely makes the world a better place.
A mantra I’ve learned, and will try to do a better job to live out, is to take the mentality of “serving the moment”. Hold in your consciousness the intention to find ways to be more aware and intentional about how you show up in every moment. Find ways to contribute what it needs. The people connected to it, and the moments created from it, will all be better off when you do.
