Two Beliefs About The Truth

Listen Now:

I had the chance to make a new friend the other day, Britt Lefkoe (she’s a powerhouse by the way!) and she left me with a massive perspective shift about the truth.

What’s true is tricky. You’d think that it’s factual and objective, but it’s actually biased and subjective as each individual interprets what they believe to be true from the set of facts they’re aware of. People’s truths tend to become more similar with shared context, but it’s impossible to ever see things exactly the way someone else does.

So as it relates to what Britt sees as the truth, she said it always has these two things: The truth is always simple, and the truth is always good news. It’s a heuristic that she has to verify what she chooses to believe is true. If a situation, circumstance, or conclusion violates either of those rules, she determines it must not be true. And as you’d imagine that creates a more peaceful and empowered life.

First related to simplicity, it’s an art. I love the quote commonly attributed to Mark Twain that goes “If I had more time I would've written a shorter letter.” It takes work to get to something that is simpler, but when it’s simple it’s much more easily understood. Adopting the belief that the truth is understandable and not overly complicated holds you to a higher standard for what you consider to be true, and prepares you to defend it.

As for the belief that the truth is always good news… It influences you to keep processing what’s happening until you see the silver lining. Even through hardship and challenges, it causes you to see that things are working in your best interest. If what’s true comes from God, the universe, source, or whatever you believe in spiritually - then this means that the world is always conspiring in your favor. You don’t accept something as true until you see it as good news, as something that serves you and is good for you, which is incredibly empowering.

I want to point out a final important detail. Britt included the word “always” in both of her beliefs. There are no exceptions. These are the rules every time. When you can’t quite simplify or see the good in what’s happening then it’s not the full truth yet. It’s a forcing function to continue reframing and diving deeper into life until it feels fully aligned.

An awareness for these two beliefs are a gift Britt Lefkoe shared with me, and now I share them with you. Let’s not let it go to waste and actually do something about it!
