The One Thing People Resist More Than Change...
If you think about it, it makes no sense. Why do people self-sabotage their success? Why do people get in their own way? Why is it that people can so clearly and passionately want something yet they can’t bring themselves to do it?
Simply put, It’s because people resist change. Evolutionarily and psychologically, change is unsafe. The way things are right now is familiar and predictable. Anything that’s uncertain or unknown isn’t, and therefore a potential threat to our safety. Our instinct for survival literally makes us hard-wired to avoid change.
But there’s one thing people resist more than change… And that’s being changed.
It takes change to a whole new level because now you add in the ego. Your ego wants to keep you psychologically safe and protect your self-image. When someone tries to change you, your ego receives it as a suggestion that you’re not good enough. It seeks to deflect that thought and comes up with reasons to sink deeper into the position it already has and double down on its argument.
Creating a healthy lifestyle is hard enough, but someone telling you that you need to be healthier makes it that much less likely to happen…
Committing to a strategy that grows your business is hard enough, but admitting you were wrong and adjusting to what someone else thinks you should do is even harder…
That’s why it’s often recommended that if you want to be influential and support someone’s evolution, you should try to make it their idea and not yours. Model a healthy lifestyle and show them how easy it is, and the results you get from it. Champion a better business growth strategy and let the revenue speak for itself.
One of the things I swear by is my Daily Intention Setting System. It has been so helpful in making my day to day execution more sustainable and a better match for what I want rather than fulfilling a non-negotiable commitment. I could tell my clients to do it, and that it will help them, but what’s way more effective is to be living proof of how effective it is.
