The Best Seat In The House
Have you even been to a sporting event and envied the people sitting front and center? Or walked through First Class on an airplane and wish you could upgrade your middle seat for their spaciousness? Or pulled up next to a nice car and wondered what it would be like to drive something like that every day?
There’s one common aspect that comes out in all of those instances: You’re comparing yourself to someone else and wanting to trade places. There’s a part of you that wants what they’ve got.
But what if I told you that the person at the sporting event is in debt to afford those season tickets? Or that the person in First Class is flying to visit a sick family member? Or that the person driving the sports car is going through a divorce and often has an empty passenger seat?
Just because someone looks like they’re doing better than you doesn’t mean it’s the case. Just because their grass looks greener doesn’t mean their life is more alive and well than yours.
Do you know what the best seat in the house is? Yours. Because what life would you want to live besides your own?
Our seats correspond with our lives and the people, places, and experiences that go along with it. It’s the life that we’re meant to live. Sitting in someone else’s seat would feel inauthentic and untrue to yourself. It would take you on the wrong ride. You’re meant to be exactly where you are because that’s where you’ll find exactly what you’re supposed to get.
Now that’s not to say that it’s wrong to strive for more. It’s nice to have nice things. But I believe what you’ll value more at the end of your life is the process of getting there, not where you end up. As cliche as it is, life genuinely is about the journey and not the destination.
So if you’re questioning your lot in life and wondering why things come so easy for others yet you still struggle in the most basic of ways… Trust that it’s that way for a reason. It’s the lesson you’re meant to learn, in the way you’re meant to learn it, so that you can evolve as a person.
We want nice things because we think they’ll bring us happiness, and will make us feel better about ourselves. That’s an internal game, and the more that you choose to believe that your seat is the best seat in the house, you’ll have more of what everyone else wants.
