Elevating Self Efficacy

Listen Now:

We invest in our personal development primarily for one reason: We want to improve who we fundamentally are so that we improve our life. There are a lot of things that stem down from that simple concept. When we show up more present, emotionally aware, and regulated we behave in such a way that creates the corresponding results.

Better health habits lead to experiencing the reality of having more energy and being at a healthy weight…. Bolder business activities open up bigger doors full of more opportunities, which is reflected in our bank accounts….

Any change you want in your life is downstream of changes you make to yourself and what you do. This is why I leaned in when I heard Dr. Benjamin Hardy’s definition of self-efficacy: Your ability to attain a desired result. When you have more self-efficacy then what you envision for yourself is made manifest more often. If you don’t, then you’re in less control of what comes to be.

But there’s still a missing detail. Inputs aren’t guaranteed to generate outcomes… They influence the likelihood of them happening. In that way more self-efficacy increases the odds in your favor. This is really important to consider because there are a lot of factors beyond your control that influence the relationship between cause and effect, and self-efficacy quantifies your part in that.

The main influencing factor is your environment. You are unconsciously steered in the direction that your environment is set up to take you. Increasing your self-efficacy involves knowing how your environment is pulling you and taking intentional action to redesign it such that its influence is in your favor.

People mistake these concepts. Just because something isn’t guaranteed doesn’t mean it’s now out of your control… You can intervene and introduce factors that change the probability of what’s going to happen. In that way you are impacting the result, but just in an indirect way.

We often neglect to realize how powerful we are, and how much say we have in what happens automatically around us. When we’re aware of the nature of those influences, we can interact with them and change them.
