The 3 Types Of Clarity
A lot of our focus goes to being more consistent, disciplined, and organized… But less goes into figuring out what it is you should be doing in the first place.
A major problem in the world is that people don’t follow through on doing the things they know they need to do to improve their life and business. It’s something I feel really passionately about, and have built my mission statement around: Converting intention into action.
Having said that, following through only matters when you know exactly what it is that you need to do and believe that it will improve your life in the ways that you want it to. To figure that out, I developed a framework called The 3 Types Of Clarity.
The first type of clarity is Directional Clarity.
Directional Clarity is a matter of deciding what you actually want. This needs to take into account all of life's tradeoffs and considerations. What we want doesn't exist in a vacuum, it's dynamic and woven into your experience of everything else, and you need to find the point in the spectrum that is best for you. For the sake of a metaphor, let's call this the top of the mountain.
The second type of clarity is Strategic Clarity.
Given that direction and end goal, you need to decide the most likely path to getting there. Many people get stuck waiting for new options, or better ways that may or may not exist. But it's their unwillingness to commit, born from the fear of choosing the wrong thing, that's truly holding them back. Ultimately you pick the trail that right now looks like the best path to the top of the mountain.
The third type of clarity is Behavioral Clarity.
Once you've decided the strategy, now it's time to execute it. You have to do the work. The only thing that moves your life forward is action in the present moment. These are the literal steps you take up the trail toward the top.
The whole framework is designed to generate Behavioral Clarity. And when you have it, now you know what the 'right thing' to do is. It's aligned with a goal that's meaningful to you (Directional Clarity) and is most likely to work (Strategic Clarity).
This is what moves the needle. This is what matters. And this is what gives you insight into what it is you actually need to do to make progress toward the life you envision for yourself.
Then it’s time to execute.
