Plans Change, So Can Your Schedule

Listen Now:

A habit that has profoundly changed my life is getting consistent with creating a schedule for the day. Approaching the day with clarity and discernment has helped me fill my days with more of the right things.

It’s also helped me take pressure off of myself because I quantify what I can reasonably do in a day. There’s always more to do, and you can feel guilty and disappointed that you didn’t do it all. But with a schedule you accept your limitations and seek to make the most of the time you have.

A practice I’ve implemented that further expands on the benefits of scheduling is to actually update it throughout the day. For some reason we think that once we set a schedule it can’t be changed. That it’s set in stone and we need to do our best to enforce it. But I find that to be too rigid. Not only is there beauty in being able to accommodate what comes up spontaneously, but it’s impossible to predict how a day is actually going to go.

Our schedule is limited by the consciousness we had when we created it. Making a schedules means we make decisions about how we want to spend our time, but you can only operate from the information and awareness you had when you made it. This means that when new things come up and you have reasons to change your plans, your schedule should reflect those intentions.

Plans change and so can your schedule.

This works for things that happen beyond your control that you need to manage and for better things you’d like to do instead. In either case, your schedule is meant to communicate to you how you are choosing to spend your time. That’s dynamic. It changes moment to moment. Treating your schedule as an evolving game plan and not hardcoded marching orders gives you the flexibility to fill your life with the things you genuinely want.

If you’re not in the habit of creating a schedule for the day, I highly recommend you give it a try. The 21 Day Challenge I lead will help you get consistent with it, and it will change your life even if your life doesn’t seem to go according to plan. Click here to check that out.

Or if you’re looking to take your scheduling to the next level so that it represents your priorities and accommodates all of the beautiful nuances of life, try updating your schedule throughout the day and see how it goes for you!
