Applying A Recall Strategy
This is a quick little example of how applying what you learn can actually improve your life. Over the course of the years I’ve learned a lot of things in school, on podcasts, in books, and from others in conversation. One of the things that I’ve learned about is how to improve your ability to remember something.
This was important a few weeks ago when I was on a run. For the last month or so I’ve been choosing to exercise, drive, and eat more often in silence. It’s been really good for my nervous system. On this occasion, I chose to go for a run and not take my phone with me.
About a third of the way into the run, my clear mind was hit with a download about the book. A piece finally clicked into place about something I needed to add to the section I was about to start writing. It was such a good point and I really didn’t want to forget it! So I employed one of the recall strategies I’d learned to help me remember it: Using acronyms and stories.
The point I wanted to capture was another reason people don’t follow through, which is that maybe they did some of the action but not all of it. I needed to summarize that down to something simpler - DDA - Didn’t do all.
I noticed that DDA backwards is ADD, the word add. Well this is something I wanted to add to the book! So now I had my story. What was it I wanted to add (ADD) to the book? DDA - Didn’t do all of it. And 25 minutes later, I remembered it and was able to write it down in my notes so that I could reference it later. To be fair it was really convenient how perfectly it all worked out with letters and patterns. But still!
The craziest part is, even today a few weeks later, I still know it. That’s the power of using the principles you learn. They have the potential to make a lasting impact on you! It’s all about translating the information into something that’s usable for you.
Here’s what I’ve done to do exactly that, and it’s responsible for the growth and success I’ve experienced. Over the course of the last 10 years I’ve taken the best insights I’ve learned about living your best, most consistent, most intentional life and consolidated them into a single daily process. I call it my Self Improvement Scorecard. Click here to check out how it works, I’ve got a video walking you through it step by step!
